Public speaking is a lifetime skill that boosts one’s chances for success. While not everyone is an eloquent speaker, Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO assures, “The art of public speaking can be learned. With time and constant practice, one can excel in speech and presentation.” For beginners, she offers these tips :

1. Work on your confidence. Take the initiative to speak up during discussions and meetings.

2. Practice reading aloud. Learn to pace yourself, breathe, and feel comfortable.

3. Ask a friend to critique your speaking skills, and work on the pointers for improvements.

4. Lose the fillers ( “ah” ,”er”, “um” , “actually”,” basically,” “ you know” , I mean,” “like”

5. Learn to tell your story. Integrate emotionally charged events to make it engaging.

6. Use the power of 3 (i.e., 3 descriptives, 3 examples, 3 lessons, etc.).
